Jan Krtitel Vanhal (1739-1813)

Czech composer and pedagogue. Studied in Bohemia, Vienna (by the renowned Austrian baroque composer J.J.Fux) and Italy, worked mostly in Vienna. His works are homophonic since the very beginnings, though with some elements of polyphony (mostly in his early preclassical years). Later works fully in the style of Vienna Classicism.

Works: more than 100 symphonies, about 100 string quartets, many piano sonatas, sonatines etc., about 40 organ fugues, cathedral compositions and theoretical works
