Katapult
active from year 1975
The most popular Czech rock'n'roll band of 70's and 80's. Simple melodies and lyrics remind of the music of Status Quo. The band started in Pilsen under the name of Mahagon. After relocating to Prague it was renamed to Katapult as there already was another jazzrock band called Mahagon at that time, lead by Petr Klapka. The name Katapult was also not quite original; under this name a studio band shortly performd and wes disbanded in 1976; Riha and Kohout appeared in their lineup and took over the name for their new band. The band has been hunted by communist officials from the very beginning; even though, they manage to record occasionally and perform in public, and surprisingly, keep the attention of an unbeliavable number of fans. In 1990, Sindelar leaves and Katapult announces disbanding. However, 2 yers later they come back again. The most serious blow comes in 2007 when the drummer Kohout (who accompanied the band since the beginning, in spite of several breakups and returns) dies. At the same time, the health of Sindelar is getting worse. Katapult announces the final farewell tour for 2008. Sindelar dies in 2009; on top of that, the other drummer Jahn dies the same year; however under the fans pressure, Riha goes on under the Katapult name.
