Kryl, Karel

the best known Czech exile singer and songwriter, main representative of the anti-communist protestsong. After 1969 living in Germany, he became a redactor of Radio Free Europe; he went on composing, recording, also writing books. Some of his songs were sung in former Czechoslovakia by campfires and almost became traditional. In 1990 he came back to his home country, recorded several more albums, none of which gained as much popularity as the first two. He died unexpectedly in 1995 by a heart attack.
