Jan Campanus Vodnansky

born: 1572-12-27
died: 1622-12-13
birthplace: Vodnany
diedplace: Praha

Czech poet of European importance, scholar and composer. He studied at the University of Prague (in 1596 gained degree of Master of Free Arts). He worked as teacher in Prague and Kutna Hora. Since 1603 he lectured on Latin and Greek at Prague University; he became professor, dean and later the chancelor. Though he was not composer by profession, his compositions are a successful evidence of Czech musical thinking of late renaissance and illustration of the evolution of early baroque music upon late renaissance elements.
His life was described in the novel "Mistr Kampanus" by Czech writer Zikmund Winter.
