Son of a patriot and amateur theatre actor Antonin Knahl. Schoolmate of Bedrich Smetana at the grammar school in Prague. Sang in boy's Choir of St. Vitus Cathedral, Prague. Took musical lessons from Alois Jelen, patriot composer and conductor. He composed mostly chorus works and patriotic songs. In addition to that, he composed some works for organ, wind instruments and piano.
