Nos, Pepa
active from year 1966
Folk singer and songwriter, one of the cultic personalities of the anti-communist singers' movement of 1970's - 1980's. Persecuted and banned for his open criticism of the regime of that time, he gave concerts half-legally or illegally. He earned his living as an English teacher and Yoga trainer. After the fall of the communist regime, he recorded several albums with recapitulation of old works as well as new songs. Even in the new régime, he remained the protest singer, pointing out the twisted face of democracy in all the spheres of social life. Unfortunately, after losing the common enemy, he took part in the phenomenon known as "quarreling songwriters". Some of the most popular singers of the old times started to refer to possible cooperation of the others with former communist secret intelligence ("State Security"). This lead to unforgiving rivalry among people that once were best friends (as it happened between Nos on one side and Tresnak with Merta on the other side). Maybe the reluctance to compromising is the basic tool of real protest singers but for the audience, these are really sad stories. From the musical point of view, most of his strength isin his old songs. Surprisingly, newer versions of the old songs (with the backing band) turn out very interesting; it becomes obvious that he can write not only good satirical lyrics, but also nice melodies. His old way of funny singing usually makes sure to hide that fact.
