George and Beatovens
years active: 1963 - 1997
cultic rock'n'roll band founded in 1963 by Petr Novak and his friends, called Beatles in the beginnings; renaqmed after the drummer Jiri Jirasek (alias George). The very first demo recordings made a big success in the radio musical show Houpacka by the reviewer Jiri Cerny. A lot of top Czech musicians went through. Several times disbanded or line-up changed: in 1966-67 Novak sings with Flamengo; in 1972 disbanded, Bohuslav Janda founded another backing band for Petr Novak in 1974 which takes over the repertoir as well as a part of the name (Beatoveni); later several time schanging the name (the authorities did not approve of foreign language names in those times, so the band was called Bohuslav Janda Band, Oldrich Wajsar Band, or G&B); in 1990 renamed back to George and Beatovens. Even after Novak's death in 1997, still active in concerts, though only quite sporadically.
